Garbage bags or trash bags are one of the most common types of plastic bags that we see everywhere from home to public places. It is an irreplaceable item. However, have you ever wondered can garbage bags be recycled? It seems to be an easy question but the answer is more complicated than it sounds.

Trash bins

Firstly, what are garbage bags?

A garbage bag, also known as a trash bag or bin liner, is a  bag made of plastic or other flexible materials that are designed to hold and contain waste materials. It is commonly used for collecting and disposing of household or commercial trash. Trash bags can come in various sizes, thicknesses, and colors for us to choose from. The most common color that we see is black bin liner bags.

What are the main materials of a garbage bag?

Trash bags are made of 3 main materials

HDPE:

HDPE stands for High-Density Polyethylene, which is a type of plastic commonly used in the manufacturing of garbage bags. HDPE garbage bags are known for their strength, durability, and resistance to tearing or puncturing. Therefore we call the bag is HDPE trash bag. Regardless of its name, the bags are often mixed with around 12% LLDPE resin so that the bag is easier to be extruded. Besides, LLDPE plastic bag manufacturers often add from 3% to 5% colored master batch into its composition to make colorful garbage bags as well increase the bag’s opacity.

LDPE:

Low-density garbage bags

LDPE stands for Low-Density Polyethylene, which is another type of plastic commonly used in the production of garbage bags. While HDPE garbage bag has a harder and more scrunchy feeling, LDPE bag is softer, more stretchy, and easier to adjust to your trash bag. Similar to HDPE, 80% of  LDPE garbage bags are made from LLDPE. The leftover is LDPE, color master batch, and other additives

Biodegradable:

Biodegradable garbage bags are typically made from biodegradable materials such as plant-based polymers, including cornstarch, vegetable oils, or other renewable resources. These materials are intended to break down more easily in natural environments. Biodegradable garbage bags are often considered more environmentally friendly compared to traditional plastic bags because they have the potential to break down into non-toxic substances.

How many types of garbage bags are there?

Garbage bag on roll:

garbage bag on roll is a packaging format for garbage bags where a continuous roll of bags is conveniently stored on a central core or dispenser. The roll format allows for easy dispensing of garbage bags one at a time. The bags are typically perforated or separated by perforated lines, enabling users to tear off a bag from the roll as needed. This makes it quick and convenient to access a new bag without the need to unfold or unfold a large box or package

Loose garbage bag:

A loose garbage bag refers to a garbage bag that is not packaged or organized in any particular way. It is a standalone bag not part of a roll, box, or dispenser. Instead, loose garbage bags are typically sold individually or in bundles without any additional packaging or organization. It is often cheaper than garbage on rolls

What are recycled garbage bags?

Recycled bin liner bags are usually made from post-consumer material and the factory’s in-house recycled material (can be HDPE or LDPE). Recycled material is considered to be more environment-friendly than virgin new material as it helps to reduce the large amount of plastic bags littered in the environment. Plastic bag manufacturers can add 30%, 50%, 70%, or 100% recycled resin according to the customers’ demand. The more recycling added, the cheaper the price is.

Can garbage bags be recycled?

Technically plastic bag manufacturers and plastic resin companies can recycle all kinds of garbage bags and turn them into new materials. However, the criteria that the bags need to meet to be recyclable are what we should discuss. Normally most the garbage bags are too dirty to recycle. To prepare garbage bags for recycling, it is generally recommended to clean and empty them of any contents. Remove any non-recyclable components such as ties, drawstrings, or any additional plastic attachments. Some recycling facilities may require you to bundle or gather multiple bags together before recycling.

How are recycled garbage bags produced?

Extruding film

  • Mix ingredients: plastic bag producers will mix all kinds of resin in a big container and make sure they are mixed evenly
  • Extruding film: Mixed material is put into a machine called an extruder. This material will turn material into plastic film
  • Cutting and sealing bags: After extruding, cutting machines will cut and seal to make complete bags
  • Packing: finally garbage bags will be packed into big cartons or sacks and delivered to the customers.
